Just last week, my friend April and I decided to take a girls weekend trip to Savannah, GA as a half-way celebration between both of our birthdays. We were looking for great sights, good history and, of course, fantastic food. Savannah did not disappoint. From River Street to Forsyth Park, we stopped in candy shops, cafés and restaurants. Here are some of the highlights.

River St: This area had the most shops and restaurants on one street and provided great options for any type of dining. We opted for sweets and seafood on this trek, not necessarily together mind you. The first night for dinner, we stopped by the Cotton Exchange Tavern which came highly recommended by the hotel concierge at the Inn at Ellis Square. We were both in awe over the amazing crab dip with homemade pita (that’s the dip part), it’s a must try. On a Saturday night, we did have a 25 minute wait time. The next dinner selection was the Oyster Bar. They had a very tempting raw bar menu, however, we weren’t in the best month for oysters so we went with a few seafood pasta dishes. Mine included scallops, shrimp, mushrooms and light white sauce and the flavors were heavenly. Every time we ended up on River St., we made a stop into the Savannah Candy Kitchen where they have 3 store fronts of candy, taffy and ice cream. They hand out free samples of taffy and praline! It doesn’t get much better than that.

Congress St: Lady and Sons, which is Paula Deen’s Savannah restaurant, was a fantastic and classic southern experience. This was a little trickier to get a reservation. You must go in person to stand in line to select a reservation. We unknowingly chose to go on Sunday which meant that the only food options were the Sunday Buffet (full menu not an option on Sundays). The food was just as down home satisfying as we expected and turned out to be the perfect complement to our very rainy sightseeing day.

Broughton St:Travel, Savannah, Food ice cream and when I heard about Leopold’s, I knew it was a must try. It has been a Savannah staple since 1919 and features their signature flavor, the Tutti Frutti ice cream. My sample choice was the chocolate raspberry swirl...yum. All their ice cream is homemade from original family recipes.

Unlike most travel destinations, Savannah was gentle on the budget. Dinner selections averaged $20 and cocktails, like vodka tonic, ran about $4. Not too shabby for the great eats we indulged in!
