We are not trying to scare anyone but there is a new fastest growing cancer that is not being talked about as it should. This cancer is found in the thyroid. Dr. Oz said that according to the latest cancer research there are 45,000 new cases reported yearly. That increase is twice the number of cases that were reported in the 1990’s. Unfortunately, three out of every four new cases are in women.

The thyroid helps regulate blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature to name a few of the thyroid’s functions. According to Dr. James Lee, Chief of Endocrine Department for Colombia University in New York, the rise has been found in women between the ages of 30-60 years of age. The women in this age bracket are fall in the estrogen bearing age. But, according to Dr. Lee, this does not dismiss women in their later years as this is a very slow growing cancer which may take many years before the cancer nodule or the symptoms to show.

Some of the symptoms are:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Hoarseness (like breathing through a straw)
  • Swelling of the thyroid

Don’t despair, become proactive. How, you ask. Well, two of the risks are radiation and family history. Just remember the lack of family history does not mean that you should not take precautions. Five dental x-rays or more increase your exposure to this cancer - every time we have an x-ray at the dental office or anywhere else they place a lead filled apron over our bodies. Next time you have any type of x-ray, ask your physician if this is 100% necessary. If it is, then now is the time to take precautions and be proactive about your health. All you need to do is ask for a thyroid guard. Yes, that is it. Even when you get a mammogram, get a thyroid guard. However, now that you know this, you must take one step further and do a monthly check up on yourself. Get a glass of water; find your Adam’s apple - finding the Adam’s apple on men is easier than in women. So ladies take a sip of water, put your head back and now slowly swallow and you would be able to feel the Adam’s apple move. Now place two fingers below the Adam’s apple and feel for any nodules. If you find one, make an appointment with your doctor. It may be nothing but let him tell you so; do not take any chances. Be empowered.
